Default Help! I'm insurance illiterate

Ok so here is my situation.

I will be turning 21 in January 25 of 09 and my health insurance with Medi-Cal (Health Net) will be cut. My parents are still eligible under my brother because he isn't 21 yet, so I'm the one being dumped to the sea.

I am a non working student living in LA, California. My parent's income is about 14K annually, we are on welfare and housing so we can't afford to pay for private med insurance and etc. I was diagnosed with Lupus about 4-5 years ago so I definitely need insurance in case something happens.

So my question is what am I to do? I don't know ANYTHING about medical insurance. I looked up Blue Shield's website and their plans and do not understand anything about it. What is "deductible" and etc? How does insurance work?

I called Blue Shield and told them about my situation and they said that since I have Lupus I do not qualify, and told me to call an insurance program called Major Risk Medical Insurance Program. So when I called Major Risk they told me I needed a rejection letter from any other insurance company that declined my individual plan and then apply to them.

Can someone please help? I don't know what to do!

Samiam88,

Generally you have two options: get an individual health insurance policy or get insurance through a group. Your best option in my opinion, since it seems you will get declined for insurance if you apply for an individual policy, is to get a job with an employer who provides health insurance to its employees. Otherwise, you may have to get "guaranteed issue" medical insurance, which can be very expensive and/or not very good coverage.

Hope this helps.

I know what its like to not know what to do about health insurance. I was looking around one day and i found a company that was perfect for me. Next day coverage and cheap prices. The website I visited showed me everything I needed to know and I wouldn't change for the world.

A job backed with insurance plan is really a good idea. The employer will take care of everything. You'll get health insurance with no pain!

I talk to many people daily in this situation. If you can get it through an employer that is best (costs a lot less.) Also talk to your county social services and see if you qualify for medicaid.
