Hi, I assume you're in Australia (having clicked Australian Questions only - i hate answering q's with the wrong info)
Here we have Public patients, and private patients. Private patients have health insurance on top of the government medicare. They pay their doctors bills, and also pay to go to the hospital, and get a private room, and get a rebate from both medicare and their health insurance.. This rebate can be anywhere between 30-60% of the bill. Not a lot.
Public patients have no health insurance, but have medicare, and pay doctor bills, but not hospital bills. Medicare gives a rebate on doctors bills.
Having said that, our health insurance doesn't cover doctors bills. Medicare does.
So, here's where i say that you're probably better off without health insurance, but that's assuming you're in Australia.
(Sorry if you're not)
