Should we allow anyone who desires -- including businesses -- to buy into Medicare as opposed to private insurance?

If the government really is wasteful and inefficient as conservatives suggest, then private insurance will be cheaper and everyone will opt for that. If the lower overhead of Medicare really does help reduce costs, as liberals suggest, then Medicare will be cheaper and people will opt for that, and we'll get the single-payer insurance liberals want.

Why not put the rhetoric of both sides to this real-life test?

Yes, I agree. Let the free market decide, and keep leaving it to the people's choice and not forced by the government.

You will also need to factor in quality of care.

Private unregulated health care will be out of control like Gas and insurance company's . Insurance company's are driven by greed . We can at least have a vote on people to change policy . I will rather have the government than Insurance company's controlling Health care .

As a provider, Medicare is a P I T A. So, although I do believe in Healthcare for all, I don't think the gov't is the best way to do it.
