Default How do you manage in Greece as an AMerican living threre without Health

Insurance, what are the options and? how good are the doctors there? We really want to move to Greece for a year or two, but Iam worried about the halth care without insurance. Is it affordable , please let me know how it works over there and what options my family will have . Thanks so much for all your help!
Are there any insurnace plans a Greek-American can purchase there if we stay a few years ..And how are ther doctors and hospitals in Athens ? Please help, thanks so much!

Doctors are very good. Public hospitals are a mess, like every other public sector in Greec, but at the end of teh day they work (you may stay in a queue for hours for a simple thing, but they won't let you die in an emergency-even if you don't have insurance, you may just have to pay a bill, which will be completely reasonable). There are also good private hospitals, which are affordable if you get a good salary. But you can also get a private insurance scheme from all major insurance companies.
So basically, you don't need to worry. You will find a solution. The health system is perhaps a bit of a mess, but as with everything else, good scientists manage to actually do their work within this system. It's best to have a personal doctor here, a friend or a friend's friend etc., who will tell you what to do under any circumstances.

For normal everyday doctors (i.e not operation) doctors are affordable without health insurance. I never had insurance till I married - I was self employed and not earning enough to pay TEBE .. that was for a period of approx 10yrs - ok I didn't have anything major done apart from a gyn op - (won't go into details) the doc let me off the total fee as I smiled ALOT and he thought was was a poor penniless foreigner - I did have the op done at Mitera in Athens - the most expensive place and it would have cost a lot - but I could have gone to the local hospital. The doctors are mostly good - I personally trust them a whole lot more than UK - at least you can go straight to a doctor trained in your 'problem' rather than a normal doc (GP). The state hospitals can be a bit scary - rather dirty and poorly staffed but I've never heard of people getting the 'hospital virus' like in UK.
Is the reason you ask because you will probably need medical care for an existing problem (or is age a worry) or are you just being 'better safe than sorry?'

Europe is world leader in health and education. In fact, US ranks 37th in insurance. All the people in Greece have health insurances, unlike many people living in the US.
