How can the govt provide free health insurance for everyone over 65?
The whole insurance industry was founded on the idea of "A hospital stay costs a lot. Everyone pays a little, so nobody pays a lot. We don't know who's going to get sick, so everyone's covered just in case it's you."
Let's run the numbers: Say a massive hospital stay costs $50,000, but only 2% (or 1 in 50) of the population gets sick in a year. If everyone pays $1,000 a year ($85 a month), everyone's covered.
Fast forward to 2007.
The US is on the verge of becoming a mass-geriatric society.
Just about everyone who makes it to 80 will have massive hospital bills at some point.
If 80% of a group of people need a massive hospital stay, then the insurance has to cost at least 80% of that hospital stay. At that point, what good is insurance?
