Default Suicide clause in life insurance/denial?

a relative of mine commited suicide a few days ago, he had life insurance for at least 10 year through a large auto manufacturer. His family was denied his $20,ooo company insurance and his $167,000 supplemental insurance because of his death. He also doesn't get a year;s salary. Why do some remove the clause and some don't? He had severe Depression and had gone off his meds recently. Is there any recourse because it was from mental illness and not financial burdon? he left two small children
