Default Is there some way to find out what Life Insurance Policies my family member...

...may have had? My Grandfather recently passed away, and from what he told me years ago, he had life insurance in which my son and I would receive upon his death. Problems are 1. I live on the opposite side of the US and do not have access to the documents from here (would need to search his house) 2. Don't have a clue as to where he purchased the policies from and 3. I believe my aunt (who I don't trust as far as I can throw her) may have already found and destroyed the documents.

Is there anywhere I can find out this information?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

There is no central database. As you think coverage was in effect more than ten years, there's no other way to search.

Was your aunt the executor of the estate? It's highly irregular for someone to bypass their kids as beneficiaries, and go for grandkids or great-grandkids.

Contact the executor of his estate, who can search for you.

It doesn't do any good for your aunt to destroy the documents - she doesn't even know who the beneficiary is, until after the claim is filed! So I doubt she did that.

Your Aunt destroying the documents would not keep you from receiving what your Grandfather wanted you to receive. It is not like she can collect in your absence.

If your grandfather left you a substantial amount of money, then the life insurance company will make every effort to locate you.

If you want to know for sure,(if no insurance company contacts you after several months have passed) you should probably hire a private investigator to look into all of your Grandfather's affairs.

Good luck. Just don't let money get in the way of any memories you have of your grandfather..whether good or bad. He can't defend himself now.
