Default my friend was caught speeding my car in birmingham with no insurance. he lives in

ireland, is there a way out? my friend thought his insurance covered him to drive other cars, which it does not. a speeding fine arrived on my doorstep and i put his name on the form with his irish address, stating him as the driver. the west midlands police have contacted him and asked for valid insurance certificate. as he is not able to provide this, so apparently i face 6-8 penalty points and hefty fine for letting him drive without insurance.

is there anyway out of this?

Some friend, he should confine his speeding to his own car. At the very least, he should pay any expenses incurred by you now and in the future. I'm Irish by the way.

you shouldn't have let him drive, and when you got the fine, you should have paid it or made him pay. I know that doesn't help you now, but perhaps you could go to the station/office and explain that you were not aware that he was not covered to drive your car. They might sympathise and let you off with a warning (and of course the speeding fine), but i wouldn't hold your breath. Good Luck

you could say he didnt have your permission to take the car - dont know if it would work though and it is a bit bold tut tut.

It might seem daft but ring your local station and see what they say,be truthful.

it may be a new law but if it happened before last monday the day the law was introduced, the new law is invalid no UK LAW CAN BE RETROSPECTIVE so in actual fact you have committed no offence under that law.and I am not entirely sure you can be summoned for allowing him to drive without insurance. he was the one driving did he admit the speeding offence if so the no insurance as nothing to do with you at all.
he was the offender not you,

This is typical of certain aspects of the law. I do not know anyone who checks a Friends insurance before letting them drive there car. in my case it is easy, it goes on my insurance or they do not drive/If your Friend has a cover note he should send it to the police and let them work it out. You may get away with a fairly heavy fine and no points. A solicitor may well be able to help you, after all you did see his insurance and believed it to be in order didn't you? After all you are not a car insurance specialist but an honest citizen doing your best to comply with the law. I do not know if you would get away with that augment or not but take proper advice

You have admitted your guilt by putting his name to it ..You should have checked his insurance documents
So there is no way out sorry
