We just had a bad storm that took out a Cherry Tree, an Oak, and a Black Walnut. All three were ripped out by the roots and caused considerable damage to our lawn. Besides the loss of the trees, we have to clean up the mess. Although I know it's not possible to get the trees back, I want to do the best I can. So, what am I entitled to? I haven't even called our insurance guy yet. I want them to cover the cost of replacing the trees.

I am a licensed adjuster and i can tell you that most likely your policy only covers the removal of the tree...usually up to 250 per tree. Plants and shrubbery are usually excluded in all homeowners policies.Your policy cover structures and trees arent structures.

Home owners insurance is a stick area. Most homeowners insurance policies have a high deductible to prevent what they refer to as nuisance claims. I am going to guess that your deductible will be $500 or $1000.

The insurance company will pay for the clean up and probably re-sodding part of your lawn. The trees they will replace with trees from the nursery, not full grown trees but trees about 6 feet high. After the deductible the insurance will only have to pay somewhere in the neighborhood of $500 to $1000.

The insurance keeps a record of any claims you make and you are considered a high risk for a homeowner's policy for the next 5 or 7 years. They have also been know to drop people who turn in a homeowner claim. Therefore you might want to think twice about the small amount the insurance would end up paying.

depends on your policy and where you live. for us after hurricane katrina came through we were only allowed $500 max for tree clean up (which at the time was $500 per tree bc prices going up) the only ones that they would pay to replace was the oak trees and they had to be over a 100 yrs old at the time of the storm, here where i live one they are a 100 yrs old they are supposed to be reported to the historical society. so the best thing you should do is to go tomorrow and sit down with your ins person and go over every detail of your home owners and if you have it your car insurance, believe it or not you may come across coverage that you no longer need or do not need (such as road side assistance, you may have it through your cell phone etc) good luck
