Default Is Travelers the worst aut insurance company?

I only had Liability when my car was totaled in a collision with another car, so my insurance co. would only pay for my car, of course. But Travelers, (the insurer of the other car) claimed I was 80% at fault even though I was making a legal turn and the other car smashed me in the side because he was doing over 50 in a 30. The other thing, when my car needed to be inspected so I could get the other 20%, they took over a week to send a claims adjustor and then didnt tell me for another week that it had been inspected a week earlier. Meanwile I was racking up storage fees. ($50 a day) all along I tried contacting them but they kept telling me the person who handles my case was on vacation. In the end Travers would only pay 20% of the storage even though it was 100% their fault. It should have taken 1 day to get my car inspected 2 at the most.

I am an independent agent and Travelers is one of the companies that I represent. You do not state if you were making a left turn, a right turn or right on red which would affect the liability. Also how do you know that the other person was going 50 in a 30 mile per hour zone--was the speeding determined by radar? If this was not determined by radar, it is only an opinion not a fact. All insurance companies have a duty to adequately investigate and determine the liability in a manner consistent with the law and can only pay claims based on their client's liability. In some states if you are 1% at fault you are barred from collecting anything. In addition if your car was in storage you had a duty to mitigate your damages which basically means you should have done everything possible to not continue racking up storage charges. If your vehicle could be repaired, you should have moved it to the shop where you were ultimately going to do the repairs and you would not have had storage charges--leaving a vehicle in the tow company storage just guarantees high storage fees. When you cannot reach your adjustor, you should leave messages and if they are not returned in a timely fashion then speak with the supervisor. All of these contacts should be documented, i.e. maintain a list of the day and time of each call including notes on conversation, outcome and or if you left voice mail messages. You can also get the e-mail address of both the adjustor and supervisor and follow up all phone calls with e-mails. In terms of the policy that you mention that you have, i.e. that you have Liability insurance--if that is the case your policy would not pay for the damages to your vehicle in an any accident whether you are at fault or not. The only way for you to collect for your vehicle damages under a liability policy would be under uninsured motorist property damage coverage and then only if you are struck by someone who is 100% at fault and is either uninsured (and this must be documented) or fled the scene without obtaining any identifiable information (hit & run) documented with a police report. In terms of your belief about the time it takes to have an insurance company inspect a vehicle, all companies try to do this as soon as possible (it is not in their best interests to take a long time since their costs go up and it does not make for good public relations) but the timing depends on the number of claims that they are working with at any given time. Travelers invented the first automobile insurance policy and in my professional opinion is among the best companies in the country. I am sorry if your experience did not meet your expectations. I hope that you heal from the turmoil caused by this accident.

Well, there are "Standards of Fault" from case law, that are used to determine fault. And if the other guy was going straight through the intersection, and you were turning . . .. you should have yielded to the oncoming vehicle - legal turn or not - which DOES make you mostly at fault for the accident. It's actually kinda generous of them to declare their guy 20% at fault - they didn't HAVE to do that.

Now, this is lesson learned for next time, of course, but when you don't have collision, even if you think the other guy is at fault, have your car towed to YOUR HOUSE. That way there aren't any storage fees - just the towing bill.

NONE of this is Travelers fault. THEY didn't hit you. The other driver did - when you turned in front of them. You're right - it took WAY too long for them to look at your car, BUT, you're not their policyholder! THey have NO obligation to you, until a judge says their guy is at fault and has to pay!

Now, I know you're not going to pick me for best answer, because you're not going to like these things. But next time, if you want YOUR insurance company to help you work a claim, you'll have to buy the collision coverage. And before you turn left into an oncoming vehicle, be certain they aren't close enough to hit you, even if they floor the gas. Because now YOUR liability will likely be paying 80% of THEIR damages, and 80% of THEIR medical/bodily injury.

Actually, if you REALLY think they're 100% at fault, just call your agent, and ask them to call your adjuster (because you KNOW they're going to go after you for the 80% of damage to their car), and ask if your insurance company agrees with their determination of fault. See how much your liability ends up paying out - and ask them for the percentage.
