Default Is full coverage auto insurance required for traveling out of the country?

if yes, how much would it cost? I have state farm insurance.
I'm going to Canada from the U.S

The coverage territory on standard US auto policies is US, Canada & US possessions & US territories, NO WHERE else. On some policies you can buy VERY LIMITED Mexico coverage but it is so limited it is not even worth the money it costs to buy. If you are outside the coverage territory, you have to either buy insurance on your vehicle (such as going to Mexico) at the border, or buy full coverage, including liability on any rental car. I hope this helps you.

****If you are going from the US to Canada, call your agent & get a Canadian ID card!!! This is very important & required if you are pulled over or have an accident in Canada. It is a non-resident ID card (which is written in both English & French). Also, if you minimum limits do not meet Canada's (which are very high - I have heard anywhere from $200,000 to $1,000,000 depending on the province), your policy will provide the minimum required, no matter what you have for limits. Comprehensive & collision are not required - they don't care what happens to your car, just for any damage you may do to others.

if you are driving anywhere you should have insurance. If you are renting a car outside the USA, it is worth it to have the insurance offered by the rental car agency. Different countries have different requirements (for instance, Italy has significantly different req.) which the rental companies understand and if you were involved with a claim, it is so much easier to let them deal with it. When you inquire about renting, they will price it for you. It isn't much.
