Default Bodily Injury

I quote people occasionally who carry the state minimum bodily injury limits. Some times they explain that their vehicle is old and they do not need anything but the lowest coverage.

First of all, "your" vehicle has nothing to with BI.

Keep in mind that BI protects the "other" person should you be at-fault. However, should you fail to carry high enough BI to cover all the damages/claims of the other party, you are also setting yourself up to be sued. Carrying higher BI protects your assets and possibly even a part of your income from a lawsuit. Don't skimp on it.

The premium difference to go from $15,000 to $50,000 or even $100,000 is usually not that much, unless the driving record is bad.

The next time you get a quote ask for a comparison between the basic and something much higher.

And ask your agent about an Umbrella policy.
