Default Accident years ago

Just after my 18th birthday (1999) a relative co-signed on a vehicle with me.
They lived in TX and I lived in AZ. The vehicle was purchased in AZ.
A few days later I got into an accident. To make a long story short I now need to provide proof of insurance for the time period surrounding the accident.

My problem is that I barely knew the guy that cosigned. (He was my stepdad).
I had never had insurance before in my name so I assume the dealership where the vehicle was purchased took care of the insurance requirements.

My question is this... How do I go about getting proof of coverage for that vehicle for that time period? I don't know which insurance company covered the vehicle and my stepdad and mom are gone for good (MIA).

Per state law, there had to be coverage before the dealership would let the vehicle off their premesis.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

The insurance that you or the co-signer had when it was driven off the lot is what was covering you. Sounds like you need to contact your stepdad to find out what coverage was in place at the time.

Thanks for the advice. Is there any other way that you know of ? He is no longer my stepdad and I have no way to contact him. I skip trace for a living so if I can't find him, then he can't be found.

Thanks again,
Bob

Hey Bob,

You have a very interesting line of work!

I really don't know what else you could do, unless you have some idea of who he may have had insurance through. You are in a tough situation my friend!

Thanks for your suggestions. I called the dealership where I purchased the vehicle, they purge records after 7 years.. I called the finance company, they told me where to stuff my request... Great company ! I'm going to try to get the VIN and track it down that way.

Unfortunately, if you are unable to track down the insurance information you will likely be rated as someone without prior insurance. But, in six months you can probably shop around again and get a better rate.

There are companies who can give a decent rate even though you may not be able to prove prior insurance. Visit my website - I am an Arizona agent.
