Default Whose fault is this?

I need a clarification for an accident that i was involved in. I was travelling on US-101N in california from San diego to San jose. the car infront of me stopped suddenly and i came to full stop with out hitting the front car. the guy back of me came and hit my car from back. due to that impact i went and hit the front car. My question is, is that my fault in hitting the front car or the back guys fault?
Is there any law which states that?

I think you should have call first a police and reported it..or if someone has seen the incident you can prove that it was not your fault otherwise the on that hit you can say that you just stop that why he hit your back..you can seek for an advice from your agent on what to do..

here are some tips that you should do if you got involve in car accident

I agree with mhaniel... A police officer could have filed a report on the incident wherein you could forward it to your insurance agent. Anyways ... Good luck to you!

the last guy in a chain is always at fault. You need a police report, where all insurance policies must be stated. You are not at fault, period

I would agree, the person behind you was entirely responsible for the whole accident.

Just tell them the truth and you will keep your consciousness free because it is clear the first guy is guilty.

I agree. You only hit the car in front of you because you were pushed into it by the car hitting you from behind. The guy behind you is completely at fault for this.
