A thousand dollars for some scratches does seem high. I would report the accident to your insurance company. Perhaps the guy does not have insurance and that is why he did not want to call the police. Maybe he will just go away if he gets a letter from your insurance company requesting the name of his insurance company.

Good luck with it.

If you caunsed it pay it but get a 2nd estimate and go with him/her to get it. If their is no report then your insurance will not go up which is more important than being out a grand. insurance companies make you pay a deductable which can be as much as 500 bucks so you will still have to pay something. hope this helps some.

Tell him that you'll reimburse him once he produces an itemized receipt.

It sounds to me like this person does not have insurance. He knows that if the police come, his license will be suspended for a year. One thousand for some scratches is too much in my opinion. Just tell him you will have the vehicle estimated at your bodyshop and for him to bring his car there.
