Unless you live in middle-of-nowhere desert California, or maybe some parts of Northern California, you're probably driving among hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants who do not have car insurance. If you get in an accident with one of them, they will run. If you are hurt in that situation, you may be screwed.

Do you have to have it legally? Not last I checked. It it wise to not have it? No.
