Default My mate got reported for driving without a licence or insurance driving her

friends car...? What is the likelyness that this will go anywhere? She was pulled over in a brand new car without insurance or a licence, she is 19 years old and only holds a provisional. Obviously big mistake! Police were going to recover the car but I ended up taking responsibility for it because I have motor traders insurance. Just wondering how long the police/courts get to issue a summons or whatever and how long it could all take? How will she know whats happening or if she is going to get away with it? Just wondering if someone can help out. She is fully aware of what she has done and regrets every minute of it, so I don't know if this makes any difference? This is in the UK by the way, Essex to be precise. Cheers guys

Your friend will receive a summons (this can take anything up to 6 months, but is usually issued sooner). The summons will have a pre-determined court date. Your friend will not have to attend in person if she enters a guilty plea. On the rear of the summons will be a section to be filled out as to whether the plea will be 'guilty' or 'not guilty'. There is also a section to write down any mitigating circumstances. The case will be heard in her absence and the magistrates' will decide on the fine etc. She will possibly get 6 points on her provisional licence for driving without insurance as well as a hefty fine.

If she did not get a ticket right then they may have given her a break because you took responsibility. She may never hear from them. If it has been more than i month you probably will not hear from them.

She will get 6-8 points and a fine for no insurance. If you gave her permission to drive it, you can get the same penalty. If you say you did not give permission then she can be prosecuted for taking without consent (a lesser theft charge) but this will not go on her licence.

Prosecution for failing to comply with licence conditions is possible but quite rare.

The police will put the summons in her hand one day soon.

It should be over within 3 or 4 months.

Since she wasn't arrested immediately, she will probably get a summons in a few weeks and have to pay a fine. She may lose her provisional license for a while. (Assuming UK law is similar to US law.)
