Default Why can't we have Geiko,State Farm, or Progressive auto insurance in the state...

...of Ma?.? I always see t.v. commercials for them but at the bottom of the screen it says not available in Ma. and a few other states that I can't remember. If I could save money buy switching to one of those companies I would but I can't , so I have to pick from Commerce or Metropolitan. My car insurance is really expensive (I pay over $300 a month) I have only had my license for a couple years so I under stand the whole new driver thing and my car was new when I bought it so I have full coverage but the car is only a Kia Rio, far from a sports car or luxury car. I pay more for my insurance than for the car payments.

It's quite simple. Massachusetts Insurance Department sets the rates for the whole state, AND sets the policy form. If you sell insurance in MA, you HAVE to write anyone who comes to you, AT THE STATE RATES. You can't pick and choose, and you can't set your own rates for really bad drivers. YOu have to do it EXACTLY the way the insurance department says.

AND, once you start writing auto in MA, you can't leave without paying billions in fees.

Geico, Progressive, State Farm, etc, figure they can't make money, and even if they could make money this year, they'd be trapped in MA Auto for a very, very long time. That's why there are only, what, seven auto insurance companies writing in MA. That's also why, if you call around to get other quotes, the rates are all the same, for the same coverages.

There's no competition in MA for auto insurance.
