Also shop around, your mortgage advisor will probably offer a package that seems good. There are companies who specialise in this sort of business and can offer far lower prices with more upfront details.

most are completely useless and not worth the money they cost with all the small print and exclusions etc. most of them you have to be off for three months before you can even claim

Some form of insurance is absolutley necessary. You won't get any of your mortgage paid by the dole if you lose your job or unabe to work, but you would get rent paid, go figure (they introduced that a few years ago).
Mortgage protection does exactly what it says it will merely pay your mortgage. There are lots of different types with different payouts, for example some only pay interest some pay the lot.
Another option is to get income protection insurance that will pay your salary if you are unable to work. Again there are lots of different flavours.

I would see a financial advisor. Make sure it is an independant one who is not tied to any particular set of companies.
