I believe that any gift or 'thank you' should be related to the product or service you are advertising...
The first thing that comes to my mind with the gas card idea is what is the connection... how are the things related... You are off to a bad start if a person has to think that way, so be careful to have some synergy in the deal.
The best flyers I ever did benefited both the person passing it and the one receiving it.
I did a joint postcard sized 'voucher'... one side said 'Valued Customer' and the other said 'Recommend a Friend'.
Gave them out to all my customers, as these are your best 'Referrers', to pass to their friends/family. The Value of the Voucher could be anything from money off, to a freebie based on the value of the 'next' order.
I am a big lover of Network Marketing, and you just need to remember the 80/20 rule, which states that 80% of your referral leads will be generated from the top 20% of your Networkers... The moral being, devote 80% of your time and efforts looking after those 20%.
