First of all law requires that puppies not be sold until 8 weeks of age. Six weeks is to young. Pet insurance can be a good thing if you anticipate something going wrong. I would just keep a separate fund for pup emergencies. If you take care of your dog properly the chances are you will have a healthy dog. Proper vaccinations, proper diet, spaying/neutering, training, puppy proofing your home help to keep your dog healthy. Check out the ASPCA website, it gives you lots of information on how to raise a pup. He will need a series of shots as a puppy not just one. He will need a Rabies booster and then another at a year of age. Neutering costs around $150.00 depending on your dogs size. The anesthia is based on weight so for your size dog it may be less than that. A pet is an expensive venture. Make sure you get him all the vaccinations he needs in his first year of life. Most Vets recommend every three years for boosters now. They are finding dogs don't need to be vaccinated every year like they used to. At least my Vet doesn't unless the owner wants it. Once they are away from mom their immune system is open to things. Mom's milk protects while they are nursing.
