I want to adopt a dog from the pound, and it might be viewed as a "bad" breed in the eye's of our homeowner's insurance company. What should I do? How do all these people own these dogs and own houses and not get their insurance dropped? Are they all lying about owning the dogs? Should I call and tell them I want to get this dog?

I just don't understand how it all works. They know about my current dog, a Great Dane, and I know he's on their "caution" list, but not a breed we're not allowed to have.

Call and tell them you are considering adopting the dog and ask how it may affect your insurance. If the dog bites someone on your property you better believe that person will want to contact your insurance company and if they don't know about the dog you will get sued personally and lose your home owners insurance.

Officially we have a lab mix puppy. They only ask for one breed, or if you dont know some accepted mutt as the breed.

Unofficially we have a lab rottie mix.

Im not sure how you'd do it with a pure breed though.

I wouldnt directly lie about it, but you could check out other insurance companies if there is a problem.
Of course make sure he is very well trained and that he wont just be a reason for some company to start banning breeds in the future.
