Default Why do apartment complex owners compel their residents to take out renter's

insurance? My complex recently began requiring this. I was told that in case I damaged the building or caused a fire, the owners would go after the liability insurance I am now required to have. I would imagine the owners already carry insurance, so this seems like an attempt to shuffle more of their cost of doing business onto the renters. What gives?

The owners' insurance is limited in coverage. For instance, if you flood the place and ruin your neighbors' stuff, why should the owners be responsible?

it is for everyones protection. if you caused 15k worth of damage the landlord will want that money and you will have to come up with that amount if you have renters insurance then your insurance company pays out. trust me you will thank them in the future for having to make you get renters insurance.

Our insurance does not cover YOUR negligence, only ours. It also does not cover person injury inside the apartment or any of your personal property.

For instance, if someone was to break into your apartment and steal everything you had our insurance would ONLY cover the damage to the door or window they broke in from.

Also, if you caught the kitchen on fire while cooking our insurance would cover NOTHING at all.

renters in insuance for your benefit not the building. they are not liable if u have a fire in ur apartment or someone has a break in/robbery. whatever damages come from that emergency situation, you would be held liable for. it seems like they are urging you to protect yourself in case something were to happen. Sounds smart to me!
