Personal property under a State Farm renters policy is covered anywhere in the world except at a second residence. The limit is 10% at a 2nd residence. A storage unit is not a 2nd residence so there would be coverage.

If the tools are used for business purposes then there is limited coverage. If they are for personal use then you have up to the amount of coverage you have on your policy.

Hmm. First of all, it's going to depend on what state you're in, so what FORM the policy is written on. Second, it's ALSO going to depend on what the tools are used for. That's an EXTREME dollar amount of tools to "just have around the house". The FIRST thought an adjuster is going to have is, these are business related. Like you're a mechanic, or carpenter or something.

Most policies have a limit of $250 or $500 for stuff used in your business, while away from your premises. So that would apply.

Besides that, PERSONAL PROPERTY is covered, anywhere in the world, except at a secondary residence.

My bet is, you're going to have a hard time telling them why there's that much in tools in storage.
