If you're concerned about scams, then you should be looking at companies with AAA ratings. The rates would probably be a little more expensive, but at least you'll be confident in case should one one of your in-laws pass away, the beneficiary will get the death benefit as promised, without any strings attached.

You should do some research on third companies ratings such as:
Moody's
Standard & Poor's
Fitch
A.M. Best Company
