A lot depends on the age of the animal. I did research for insuring my animals (3 dogs/3 cats) and all of them were considered elderly except the 4 year old dog. It was going to cost me over $300 a month to insure them.
Also do your research because not all of them allow for routine medical exams. Some will only pay if it's something major like being hit by a car. Others will only pay for routine exams and not anything major like being hit by a car.
Make sure your vet's office will accept the insurance plan. Not all of them do.
Instead of paying insurance premiums on a policy you may never use, consider starting a health savings account of sorts for your pets. Start a savings account and put $20 from each pay into it. Use that money for pets only. If you miss a week, it's no big deal. Or if you have a few extra bucks to throw in, do it. You'll earn interest on the account and if you never use it for your current pets it can be rolled over for your next pet.
Also consider carrying a Care Credit Card:

Again, make sure your vet will accept it or what's the point?
Good luck!
